The secret idols

“Thus Jehu destroyed Baal out of Israel. Howbeit from the sins of Jeroboam the son of Nebat, who made Israel to sin, Jehu departed not from after them, to wit, the golden calves that were in Beth–el, and that were in Dan. But Jehu took no heed to walk in the law of the Lord God of Israel with all his heart: for he departed not from the sins of Jeroboam, which made Israel to sin. In those days the Lord began to cut Israel short: and Hazael smote them in all the coasts of Israel;” 2 Kings 10:28-29, 31-32 KJV https://bible.com/bible/1/2ki.10.28-32.kjv

 The secret idols

The Bible tells us that better is the end of a thing than the beginning thereof. While an initial zeal to carry out God’s instruction is great, a sustained obedience is more important. In addition, selective obedience is very dangerous. In the Bible reading today, Jehu has executed judgement on the entire household of Ahab according to the word of the Lord and destroyed all the altars and worshippers of Baal out of Isreal but did not depart from the foundational sin of Idol worship. As a result, Israel was again led astray from the worship of God with disastrous results. What are you still accommodating in your life that is competing with God? What sins have become so present and foundational that it does not come into scope for you when you receive instructions of God to depart from sin? No matter how it has become, it is still sin and God’s eyes cannot behold iniquity. Do a soul searching today and repent.

Prayer: Dear Lord, thank you for your faithful and your constant reminders of your expectations of holiness and complete obedience. Please open my eyes to see the things that I am still tolerating that are contrary to your expectations and give me the grace to separate from them in Jesus name 🙏🏾🙏🏾🙏🏾
